Preparation for the Eighth in Ordinary Time
Revised Common Lectionary Proper 3
Roman Catholic Proper 8
In our common reading, Paul praises God. In the complementary series, we are warned in Proverbs about riches and God's protection of orphans. In the semi-continuous series, Hosea foresees disaster for both Israel and Judah.
Complementary Hebrew Scripture: Proverbs 12:22-28
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight.
One who is clever conceals knowledge, but the mind of a fool broadcasts folly.
The hand of the diligent will rule, while the lazy will be put to forced labor.
Anxiety weighs down the human heart, but a good word cheers it up.
The righteous gives good advice to friends, but the way of the wicked leads astray.
The lazy do not roast their game, but the diligent obtain precious wealth.
In the path of righteousness there is life, in walking its path there is no death.
Complementary Psalm 131
<A Song of Ascents. Of David.> O LORD, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.
O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time on and forevermore.
New Testament Epistle Lesson: Philippians 2:19-24
I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may be cheered by news of you.
I have no one like him who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.
All of them are seeking their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
But Timothy's worth you know, how like a son with a father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
I hope therefore to send him as soon as I see how things go with me;
and I trust in the Lord that I will also come soon.
